Salutations For French Letters

To begin your letter, you need a proper salutation and the correct title of the person you are writing the letter to.

You can write Cher Monsieur, Chère Madame if you know the person. If you don't, you will write Monsieur, Madame, Mademoiselle.

Monsieur, Madame, Messieurs, Mademoiselle, Monsieur le Directeur, Monsieur le Ministre, are the salutations for the formal letters.

You must learn to end or close your letter, like beginning salutations.

Closure For French Letters

You can close the informal letters by writing Bisous, Grosses bises, Gros bisous, Bizoux.

In the formal letters, you can write phrases like Je vous envoie mes amicales pensées, Recevez, je vous prie, mes meilleures amitiés at the end.

For French business letters, your ending can consist of words like Meilleures salutations, Salutations distinguées, Cordialement.

In formal letters, you should always use "vous" and never "tu."

Additional Tips

In personal letters, you can use "tu," but only with people you are in terms of using that word.

The return address should be on the top left of the page. Write your name, followed by your address.

The recipient's address should always be on the right & below the return address.
